Colorful cartoon illustration of a pink snail with big eyes, a blue monkey with a happy expression, and a yellow giraffe with pink spots, all high-fiving with a background of bright colors, stars, hearts, and whimsical lines.
  • For young patients at Morriston Hospital, the journey from the children's ward to the operating theatres is a daunting one. The corridors are busy, clinical, and disorientating. The brief was to create an interactive art trail that would encourage children to move through the space with enthusiasm and energy, reducing pre-surgical anxiety and supporting better post-operative recovery.

  • Working closely with the Arts in Health Service Manager, the play team, paediatric nursing staff, and BAYouth — the hospital's youth advisory panel — the trail design was developed around two key principles: distraction + momentum.

  • To get from one place to the next in the most creative way possible. Across approximately twenty locations, the trail unfolds through funny poses, acrobatics and child-friendly vehicles. It was crucial that the design could work for different ages, with things for younger children to find and film title puzzles for the older ones to solve. The trail concludes with a climactic mural for each theatre destination — a space scene and a conga line.

  • The trail has been warmly received by staff, patients and families, and is now part of the fabric of the hospital. Since completing the work the project has been expanded to include an additional mural space and an accompanying activity book.

Working with Jo has been a genuine pleasure throughout. When bringing professionals into healthcare settings, we place a strong emphasis on professionalism, punctuality and sensitivity to both staff and patients, and Jo consistently demonstrated all of these qualities. Alongside her evident artistic talent, Jo showed a thoughtful understanding of the wider context in which we work. She provided clear and professional plans for our Estates Team, facilitated meaningful discussions with staff and our youth advisory groups, and approached her work in the hospital with genuine care and consideration. Importantly the work was completed on schedule and budget.

Bold ideas,
